The challenge

The technical installation sector faces a major challenge: high turnover among starters. Half of all new entrants leave the industry within two years. Key reasons include poor work-life balance, limited development opportunities, and dissatisfaction with leadership. At the same time, rapid technological innovation in the sector demands up-to-date knowledge and well-developed soft skills. Without action, valuable talent will be lost, and both innovation and the energy transition will be at risk. The challenge is keeping new employees engaged, motivated, and supported so their career prospects and employability remain strong.

The solution

To reduce early turnover, Wij Techniek and Harborn developed Vaksterk: an innovative digital platform that empowers starters and lateral entrants to strengthen both their craftsmanship and soft skills.

With Vaksterk, users take charge of their own growth, staying motivated and engaged at work. The platform was designed with the diversity of the sector in mind, offering multiple layers: a mobile app for the 70% field staff and a web-based version for the 30% office staff. Vaksterk provides not just learning modules but also news, videos, podcasts, and assessments. Users can track progress, earn points, and receive personalized recommendations based on their learning and career needs. By leveraging smart data, content relevance and user engagement are continuously improved—making learning more effective and attractive.

About Wij Techniek

Wij Techniek is the development fund for the technical installation sector, dedicated to the growth and development of craftsmen. With the Starters Program (SBP), they provide a powerful springboard for young people and career changers starting their career in technology. The program not only equips them with the right skills and knowledge but also helps them stay motivated and develop sustainably in this dynamic sector.

Experience

With Vaksterk, users enjoy a seamless journey: from their first introduction to the industry to advanced modules tailored to their career stage. End users were at the center of the design and development process. Through prototyping and testing (alpha and beta releases) with a group of 100 engaged users, the platform was refined iteratively. This user-centric approach ensured that the solution fits the daily reality of craftsmen and delivers tangible value in their work.

Project approach

For this project, Harborn’s developers, designers, and project managers worked closely together in a multidisciplinary team. Using an iterative scrum approach and short communication lines, we were able to move quickly and grow the platform step by step, based on feedback from both the client and end users. Every sprint was co-created with Wij Techniek to align content, functionality, and strategy with real-world needs. This approach resulted in a future-proof platform that truly supports its users.

Vaksterk provides Wij Techniek with valuable data and insights into starter behavior, needs, and development, enabling targeted improvements in both functionality and content. By supporting starters in a low-threshold and accessible way as they shape their careers, the platform significantly reduces the risk of early turnover.

With Vaksterk, Wij Techniek now has a powerful, future-oriented platform that not only stimulates personal and professional growth but also actively addresses the structural turnover problem in the technical installation sector.

By involving end users from the start, offering relevant and engaging content, and leveraging smart technology, we created a digital ecosystem that motivates, supports, and continuously generates valuable insights. This integrated approach to platform development, marketing, and data-driven steering forms a solid foundation for sustainable employability, talent retention, and long-term success.
