From a headless CMS to a content-driven WordPress

LINKIT

LINKIT

The challenge

LINKIT had a modern website built on a headless CMS. While this setup was technically sound, it proved to be cumbersome for the marketing team in practice. Every new page type or content adjustment required assistance from an external developer, leading to high costs and slow turnaround times. For a company like LINKIT, one that needs to respond quickly to market changes and the needs of both clients and prospects, this approach was not sustainable. The website functions as a digital business card: a place where LINKIT showcases what they do, how they do it, and the expertise they bring to the table.

LINKIT wanted to eliminate this dependency. Their goal: a user-friendly platform that would allow the marketing team to manage content quickly, flexibly, and independently, without compromising on performance, security, or visual identity. A website that aligns perfectly with their philosophy: knowledge sharing is key.

The solution

Harborn’s Digital Marketing Team developed a functional and scalable WordPress website that fully meets LINKIT’s needs.

WordPress is a globally supported CMS that’s continuously maintained and developed. It offers extensive opportunities for customization, exactly what LINKIT required. All content is now managed using tailor-made, modular blocks. This enables LINKIT’s marketers to independently and flexibly build new pages, publish cases, and share job openings.

Why WordPress?

WordPress was chosen for its balance of flexibility, user-friendliness, and long-term viability. Unlike a headless CMS, where technical skills are often needed to make changes, WordPress offers out-of-the-box solutions like plugins, reusable components, and modular customizations. Harborn has extensive experience with WordPress and a growing library of custom-built solutions that can be quickly tailored to meet client-specific needs. Additionally, many marketing professionals are already familiar with WordPress, making onboarding new team members easy and lowering the threshold for publishing and content sharing.

International Expansion Within One Central CMS

Following the successful launch of the new website, several follow-up projects were initiated. Harborn also took on the integration of LINKIT’s international websites, LINKITsystems.de, LINKITsystems.com, and LINKITsystems.co.za, which are now consolidated into a single, central WordPress CMS. Thanks to this setup, LINKIT can easily manage and publish content across multiple websites using just one login. Technical maintenance has also become significantly more efficient: updates and improvements only need to be made once in the central codebase and are automatically applied to all connected sites.

Collaborating for a fresh result

Due to both internal capacity and the desire for a fresh perspective, LINKIT asked Harborn to handle the website migration. One of the biggest challenges in the 1-to-1 transfer was integrating their job vacancy management system, which relies on an external tool and required custom development. The rest of the website, including modifications previously made by LINKIT, could be seamlessly migrated and optimized where necessary. Thanks to the new multisite structure, LINKIT can now manage all its websites centrally via a single CMS. This makes technical maintenance significantly more efficient: updates and improvements only need to be implemented once and are automatically applied across all linked websites.

LINKIT has no regrets about switching from a headless CMS to a “fixed” setup. While certain technical capabilities may have been slightly reduced, other possibilities, such as SEO optimization, have greatly improved. The look and feel of the site are fully customized; only the source code reveals that it’s built in WordPress.

Content entry took place on-site at Harborn, enabling LINKIT’s team to receive immediate guidance on CMS usage and the custom blocks. The result is a solid, future-proof platform, and the marketing team is highly satisfied: they can now support the sales department more effectively and no longer need a developer to publish their killer content.
