Accelerating the development of heart disease medications with AI

River BioMedics

The challenge

River BioMedics conducts advanced medical experiments where video analysis plays a crucial role in evaluating cardiac tissue function, with the goal of discovering and developing new drugs for cardiovascular disease . Their workflow relied on a single AI model, which no longer met the needs of their evolving experiments. To improve and simplify these processes for researchers without extensive IT knowledge, Harborn developed two user-friendly Windows applications for video analysis and AI model training.

The solution

Harborn developed two Windows applications to extend River BioMedics’ software capabilities:

Analysis Application: Supports both an AI mode and a template-matching mode for efficient video analysis.
Training Application: Enables the training of new AI models based on customized experimental data.

Both applications integrate seamlessly with River BioMedics' existing infrastructure and significantly simplify the analysis and training workflows.

About River BioMedics

River BioMedics is a Dutch biotech startup founded in 2020 as a spin-off from the University of Twente. River is a cardiovascular drug discovery company using 3D cardiac tissues with realistic flow dynamics to accurately test the effects of medications in models of cardiovascular disease. These human models play a vital role in advancing new treatments.

Our approach

Throughout the project, our multidisciplinary team collaborated closely with River BioMedics through regular check-ins and feedback sessions. Using an iterative development process with presentations and demos, we ensured that the final solutions were not only technically robust but also aligned with the researchers' daily workflows.

Strategic value

River BioMedics now has access to flexible and scalable tools that allow them to quickly adapt to changes in their experimental processes. The applications make it easier to analyze and share experimental results enhancing the drug discovery process.

From idea to impact

Thanks to the new applications, River BioMedics can now analyze video data more efficiently and accurately, leading to better insights and broader applicability of their experimental results. The team now benefits from a solid, user-friendly toolset that increases productivity and adaptability.

With these tools, River BioMedics can perform and share analyses more quickly and effectively, strengthening their research capabilities while remaining agile in a dynamic experimental environment.

In 2025, Harborn expects to develop an additional application that enables users to label specific video frames. This will eliminate the need for separate annotation tools, making the training flow even more streamlined.
