Future-ready care through automated processes.

The challenge

Demand for care is increasing, while it is becoming more difficult to find enough healthcare professionals. For the mid-sized regional Ziekenhuis Gelderse Vallei (ZGV), the question is urgent: how do you continue to provide high-quality, personal care when pressure on people and resources keeps increasing?

The solution

Through a range of solutions, ZGV is building a hybrid hospital in which physical and digital care connect seamlessly. Together with Harborn’s Intelligent Automation team, ZGV is taking the next step in digitalization and intelligent automation. The solution consists of:

Intelligent Automation with RPA: We are developing digital employees that relieve healthcare professionals of all kinds of administrative tasks related to their primary care processes. Four processes have been selected for automation and will be rolled out hospital-wide across all outpatient clinics. In addition, one process has been selected for automation on the general inpatient wards. Examples include processing referral letters, preparing MDOs (multidisciplinary team consultations), and organizing follow-up visits. Automating these processes saves valuable time, allowing healthcare professionals to focus more on direct patient care and creating capacity for the growing number of patients.

Remote monitoring and hybrid care: Where possible, clinical monitoring and home monitoring are integrated into digital eCare pathways. Patients measure at home and share their data digitally, enabling healthcare professionals to monitor remotely and intervene when needed. This makes more care at a distance possible and reduces workload within the hospital.

Digiwijs: digital skills for everyone: Through the Digiwijs development and change program, ZGV supports employees and patients in working with digital care, from practical tools to digital coaches on the work floor. This results in less administration, more standardization, and better alignment of care.

About Ziekenhuis Gelderse Vallei

Ziekenhuis Gelderse Vallei in Ede is a hospital with a strong regional role in the Gelderse Vallei area. In the digital domain, ZGV sees itself as a learning hospital that builds intelligently on proven examples from other hospitals. Project leader Joyce van der Linde is responsible for the generic eCare pathway in the outpatient clinics and for planning ZGV’s transformation program.

Our approach

ZGV’s transformation plan is built from the medical departments upward. Physicians, department managers, and theme managers propose topics. The practical questions that emerge form the basis of the roadmap; 80 digital care pathways for a large number of patient groups are being rolled out hospital-wide. The ultimate goal is to provide digital support for all patient groups. Harborn Digital joined with a multidisciplinary team of consultants and Intelligent Automation specialists. In addition to Joyce van der Linde, various disciplines from ZGV are also regularly involved.

From idea to impact

The digital transformation is multi-year (until 2027), but the impact of similar projects is already visible on the work floor. Less repetitive work and more time for care. A good example is the Care Control department, where digital employees are already reducing administrative tasks. The result: the department was able to eliminate a vacancy, and employees have more time for substantive work.

Another good example is a generic eCare pathway that has already been developed for all patients who are admitted and undergo surgery. The information, questionnaires, and instructions are delivered through a single digital channel, ultimately resulting in fewer phone calls. This makes planning and preparation much more predictable.

“We have a dedicated team that truly focuses on us. That’s what enables us to develop a great deal in a short period of time and work together effectively.”

Joyce van der Linde

Strategic value

Within the multi-year transformation program, concrete goals have been set to structurally reduce pressure on healthcare staff. A key principle is the more efficient deployment of nurses, outpatient clinic staff, and physicians, without compromising the quality of care.

With the comprehensive transformation program, ZGV is laying the foundation for a hybrid hospital model that:

  • Is future-ready to absorb part of the increasing demand for care;
  • Relieves healthcare professionals by transferring repetitive tasks to digital employees;
  • Standardizes patient communication, increasing quality and satisfaction;
  • Accelerates digital innovation and strengthens ZGV’s position as a regional partner in an increasingly digital care chain.
